Here is an update to Shirley's case, "One Mothers Voice". She was in court yesterday for the juvenile hearing. She's anxious to be able to tell her story and have the divorce over and the children out of the hands of the abusers. Please pray for Shirley that she may have the strength and clarity of mind to go forward, tell the truth and to see that justice is served and those children are returned to her.

Isn't it amazing how the powers that "used to be" can come in and threaten people that contribute to this website to take things off of the internet! That abusive power must stop.... Well there is plenty of additional information on this mother other than the video she had posted on You Tube. Meanwhile, take a look at the link with the background information on Shirley Riggs and her 4 children. I'll be working on getting her back online.

In response to a letter I wrote to Reverend Reeb thanking him for both speaking about this evil and recording it, he replied:

Dear _____,

Thanks so much for your e-mail. It was kind of you to take the time to write me. It does my heart good to know that my message spoke to you. Although I am very saddened to know that you experienced abuse. It is unfortunate that the church has been virtually silent on this issue. I am hoping to change that. It begins with ministers being willing to name the evil of abuse in the pulpit and preach against it.

Thanks for your encouragement and affirmation. May the peace of Christ enfold you.

Thanks Sean for giving me your honest point of view. Sean was raised in Pakistan. He tells me stories of being 9 years old and seeing bombings in the streets. His friends body parts laying on the road. Sean is not unusual in this respect. All the children watch this kind of violence, day in and day out. Sean used the word desensitization, you get used to it over time. He tells me the best way to understand it is to say “there are no real rules in place”. He gave this example: People here in the US won’t run a red light in the middle of the night, in Pakistan they will do whatever they want, as long as they can get away with it. Adults there encourage children to be violent and dishonest. He compared it to the Mafia. The family keeps secrets and portrays themselves as something else. He tells me in order to survive you learn to be aggressive, the aggressive live and even flourish, otherwise you don’t stand a chance. He thought is was similar to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Then he told me he was so surprised that kind of violence happens here in this country when Americans grow up with 3 meals, a roof over their family's heads but they can still go on violent college killing rampages. He said he thought the difference may be that in the US, violent television and video games could trigger it as well as a general narcissistic entitlement view. It’s a sad state when a man internally believes that he can commit murder. He rationalizes it and feels thoroughly entitled to it. I see comments on other blogs where the Muslim community is outraged that some people have pointed fingers at their religion for answers to this murder. It’s not the religion though, but it certainly is the culture that seems to grow quite well in an environment that accepts violence. So how does this change and how do we do the changing?

I just showed this article to a Pakistani friend at work. He recognized the husband and wife's names as being Pakistani as well. He had some very interesting thoughts on this. Tonight when I get home, I'll put them in here. But it all goes back to the way we raise our children. The parents and the society.

Most divinity schools do offer training in this area but since our church (LDS) leaders are all laymen, not professionals and not paid, they don't get it. I think the church should provide training in this area to all Branch Presidents, Bishops and Stake Presidencies. The church is not exempt from abusive relationships and many women do not get the help they need from their church leaders even when they tell them they are being abused.

I was in an abusive relationship with my second husband. The "when" depends on the dynamic of the relationship. But when it does get physical--you should absolutely get the police, or some agency involved. Violence only escalates and it will escalate faster if he thinks he can get away with it. Also, you may need a written record of the abuse if and when you are ever in a courtroom. If you do call the police--insist that they file a report--they don't always. If you don't need medical attention they may not think it's important enough. File a report and make sure you get a copy for your records. Remember that he doesn't act this way with EVERYONE. He doesn't do it at work, he doesn't do it with his (buddies, mother, etc.) If he did, he'd probably get fired or get his ass beat. He does it with you because YOU LET HIM get away with it. You blame yourself (I didn't have the dinner ready on time), you make excuses for him (he's tired, stressed etc.) The bottom line is--there is NEVER a good enough reason for him to hit you. If he can't control himself--he can always leave until he cools off. But he CAN control himself when he wants to (at work etc.)
